Ammo box - how do i remove rust

I picked up a couple good size ammo boxes for pretty cheap at my local flea market. Can i put these in a a plastic garbage bag with oven cleaner to remove the rust (this is a great technique for cast iron pans and derusting)? Or will I ruin the seal? I prefer not to have to go through the hassle of wire brushes etc. I also saw a technique online for vinegar bath? Anyone have a better suggestion? Not much up on the net on this topic.

Yes, if you do that you will ruin the seal. Don't do that.

Scrub the rust off with a wire brush, and then re-spray paint the ammo cans. I have done it and they look like new.
