I enjoy reading and am a long time fan of Stephen King. Probably his best work is in the extremely long novel about survival and societal breakdown, The Stand. I've read the book 4 times over the years, and own the DVD version of the movie. As usual, the book is much better.
Using Wikipedia a few months ago, I was researching The Stand, and waaaaay at the bottom of the page, learned that King had been inspired by other novels he had read. One was Swan Song by Robert McCammon and Lucifer's Hammer by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. Swan Song is post nuclear war survival and Lucifer's Hammer is about post comet / earth collision survival. Amazon.com told me that in that same genre, I may enjoy another novel, which I am currently reading, Patriots, Surviving The Coming Collapse by James Wesley, Rawles. That one is about an economics collapse of civilization, which is like reading today's news. It is written as a novel, but is intended to be instructional in survival techniques. The author uses a term similar to SHTF, but in his use, it is the Schumer hitting the fan. Ya gotta love that one. (Because of our current political conditions, we can perhaps modify it further to "OHTF.")
All three of these works are heavily involved in survival involving the use of firearms and defense of the good guys. "Patriots" as an instructive novel, goes into sometimes tedious detail about fortification, defensive perimeters and supplies, and assumes that we are all independently wealthy, but none the less, is stocked with some excellent ideas for us.
I highly recommend the above books for information, education and entertainment. I also highly recommend upgrading your personal armories for the coming Obama gun grab.
