Educational Zone #170 – Testing Aguila .22 Competition Ammo

My good buddy Ted, recently was hunting some .22 ammo to shoot (like most of us nowadays), and ran across a brick of Aguila .22 Match ammo. It said right on the box, “For Competition”, and “The Best of Accuracy”.

Here it is. Sounds like just the thing we need.

Our “standard” of ultimate .22 accuracy has been Wolf Match Target, and it is some great stuff.

But it, like most other .22 ammo has been a little hard to find. We wondered if this might be an acceptable substitute.

Ted came down for a visit for a few days and we hit the range this morning.

Here’s Ted on his custom Ruger 10-22 rifle.

It has a Green Mountain and has been all slicked up with all the bells and whistles.

It is a shooter.

Here I am on my Ruger 10-22, which is almost stock except for the magazine release lever and a Leupold 4 X 14 scope.

I also tried my Savage Mark II bolt gun.

We set up some targets on the 50 yard line and got settled in and shot a bunch of groups.

Here’s what we typically saw. This is one of my targets.

The groups on the left are the Aguila and the groups on the right are 5 shots of Wolf.

And here’s one of Ted’s groups with the same.

Conclusions:

It looks like the Aguila is “good ammo”. But it can’t keep up with the Wolf in our rifles.

Keep in mind that all .22 rifles have ammo that they “like” or “don’t like”. Maybe your rifle will like one of these better or worse than our rifles did.

But there is only one way to know for sure… You have to go shoot them.

Oh well, a great day at the range, and a great visit with an old buddy.

Better than the best day we ever spent at work.
