The 5.56×45mm NATO (official NATO nomenclature 5.56 NATO) is an intermediate cartridge developed in the United States and originally chambered in the M16 rifle. Under STANAG 4172, it is a standard cartridge for NATO forces as well as many non-NATO countries.[3] It is derived from, but not identical to, the .223 Remington cartridge.

The Box O’ Truth #34 – Bullet Proof Wallboard

I recently got a message from my friend Pighelmet. He said that he had a piece of bullet-proof material and would I like to shoot it. Whadda you think? When I got it from the Brown Truck O’ Happiness, I took a look at it. It was about 14 inches square and a little over 1/4 inch thick. I sent him a message and asked for all the details he had. “What you have there Don is a true piece of “Ballistic [...]

The Box O’ Truth #40 – Deflected Bullets and the Box O’ Truth

Many of us are hunters and some are combatants. We all know that if a bullet hits a hard object, it can be deflected in a completely different path than the one it was traveling before the hit. A question we want to test today is this: Are some bullets more resistant to being deflected than others? Sometimes a deer will be behind a brush and only allow a narrow area for a hunter to place a bullet through. Even then, that [...]

Educational Zone #19 – Wolf .30 Carbine Ammo Evaluation

I enjoy shooting my .30 Carbine. It is a 50th Anniversary model made by Iver Johnson. It is a great shooter. The problem is that shooting .223 and 7.62 X 39 ammo, which is so cheap, makes feeding a .30 Carbine kind of painful. There just isn’t any cheap ammo available, at least not as cheap as for other rifles.Last Saturday at the Big Houston Gun Show, HoustonHusker and I were looking at ammo prices and I saw some [...]

Today’s Question: Does shooting Wolf ammo in an AR result in the “Lacquer” or “Poly” being deposited in the chamber, resulting in stuck cases? My buddy Tman and I do a lot of shooting. I had previously shot a lot of Wolf 5.56 ammo (steel cased) through my Model One uppers and had no problems whatsoever. But one day, I followed-up a session with a few rounds of South African ball. The first [...]

The Box O’ Truth #1 – The Original Box O’ Truth

This is the Box. Having some time for study of this fascinating sport, I built the “Box O’ Truth”. The purpose of the Box is to test the penetration of various rounds. People often say, “I think…”. “I suppose…”, “I bet…”, when discussing facts like penetration of ammunition. There is only one way to know how much a certain round penetrates. You must [...]
